Detailed content

Product Overview

The Basler DECS-200-2L is a microprocessor-based Digital Excitation Control System designed for generator excitation and power management applications.

The DECS-200 provides closed-loop control of generator excitation and can operate in Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR), Field Current Regulation (FCR), Power Factor (PF), and Reactive Power (VAR) modes. It also includes excitation limiting, generator protection functions, paralleling compensation, event recording, and other functions used in generator voltage and excitation control.

The -2L suffix identifies a particular DECS-200 Style Number configuration. For a replacement project, the complete Style Number and nameplate information should be checked rather than treating every DECS-200 as electrically identical. The Basler manual identifies Style Number variations for control power and operating-power configurations.

The DECS-200’s maximum continuous field output is 15 A DC, with 32, 63, or 125 VDC field-voltage applications supported by the platform.

Main Functions

The DECS-200 combines voltage regulation, excitation control, limiting and generator protection in one controller.

Key functions include:

  • Automatic Voltage Regulation
  • Manual / Field Current Regulation
  • Reactive Power control
  • Power Factor control
  • Soft-start voltage buildup
  • Overexcitation Limiting
  • Underexcitation Limiting
  • Underfrequency compensation
  • V/Hz limiting
  • Reactive droop compensation
  • Reactive differential compensation
  • Exciter diode monitoring
  • Generator field protection
  • Event recording and data logging
  • Automatic tracking between operating modes
  • Optional transfer between redundant DECS-200 units

These functions make the unit suitable for both generator voltage regulation and more comprehensive excitation-system control.

Excitation Output

One important characteristic of the DECS-200 is its PWM output power stage.

The platform supports:

  • 32 VDC
  • 63 VDC
  • 125 VDC

field-output applications, with a maximum continuous field current of 15 ADC.

For stronger excitation, the system can provide a higher short-duration forcing output. The manual specifies a maximum instantaneous field-current setting of 30 ADC for the applicable forcing functions.

The actual generator field requirements must always be checked against the complete DECS-200 Style Number and excitation-system design.

Typical Applications

The DECS-200 is used in generator and power-generation excitation systems, including:

  • Synchronous generator excitation
  • Generator voltage regulation
  • Power factor control
  • Reactive power control
  • Brushless excitation systems
  • Static excitation applications
  • Utility power generation
  • Industrial power plants
  • Generator retrofit projects
  • Replacement of legacy excitation controllers

Basler also identifies DECS-200 as a technology used for excitation-system upgrades and retrofit applications.

Installation & Configuration

Before installing a DECS-200-2L replacement, verify:

  1. Complete DECS-200 Style Number.
  2. Existing control-power configuration.
  3. Excitation operating-power voltage.
  4. Generator PT and CT configuration.
  5. Field-voltage and field-current requirements.
  6. AVR/FCR/PF/VAR operating modes.
  7. Limiter settings.
  8. Paralleling and reactive compensation settings.
  9. Existing relay and contact-input wiring.
  10. Communication and configuration requirements.

The DECS-200 can be configured through its front-panel HMI or with Basler’s BESTCOMS software.

For a replacement installation, backing up the existing configuration before removing the original controller is strongly recommended.

Inspection & Maintenance

For a spare or replacement DECS-200-2L, inspection should include:

  • Nameplate and Style Number verification
  • Serial-number verification
  • Front-panel LCD inspection
  • Pushbutton and LED check
  • Terminal and connector inspection
  • Power-up self-check
  • Voltage-sensing verification
  • Current-sensing verification
  • Analog input test
  • Contact-input test
  • Relay-output test
  • Communication test
  • AVR/FCR functional test
  • Controlled excitation-output test

Because this is generator excitation equipment, final commissioning should be performed under the plant’s approved electrical and generator testing procedures.

Lifecycle Status

Basler currently lists the DECS-200 as discontinued and identifies the DECS-250 as the recommended newer product.

That does not make an existing DECS-200-2L unusable. For plants already equipped with DECS-200 systems, an exact replacement unit can still be valuable for maintenance and minimizing modification to an established excitation system.

The DECS-250 should therefore be described as a newer product / migration option, not automatically as a drop-in replacement for every DECS-200-2L installation.

Identification & Compatibility

When purchasing a DECS-200-2L, compare the complete physical nameplate rather than relying only on the DECS-200 family name.

Recommended verification points:

  • DECS-200
  • -2L Style Number
  • Complete serial number
  • Control-power rating
  • Operating-power configuration
  • Field-output rating
  • Firmware/configuration information
  • Terminal arrangement

This is particularly important because DECS-200 units are available in different Style Number configurations.

Condition

For the referenced listing, the actual physical condition and included accessories should be confirmed from the seller’s current listing and photographs before purchase.

For used or surplus excitation equipment, it is preferable to verify the unit by nameplate, power-up test, HMI operation and excitation-control testing rather than relying only on external appearance.
